Weekly Market Comment – April 8th 2019

The positive trend in equity markets since end 2018 has continued into the start of the second quarter, with share prices making further gains last week. Investors took encouragement from supportive Chinese PMI data and further progress in US / China trade talks. These developments helped allay fears that a global recession may be imminent, but at the same time were not strong enough to suggest that central banks may need to revert to a tightening monetary policy stance. Equities were oversold in Q4, and while there has been a logical basis for the recovery in values year to date, investors should not forget that equities are a volatile asset class.
